I booked a holiday to Egypt in September 1997 – my first solo vacation. Although I knew very little about Egypt or its history before my trip, I learned a HUGE amount in the space of two weeks.
The first week was spent cruising the Nile, and viewing a number of ancient sites including the Temples at Philae, Kom Ombo, Edfu, Dendera…
A week of luxury in Luxor followed, visiting The Valley of the Kings, The Valley of the Queens, The Temple of Hatshepsut…
Feeling increasingly relaxed after a difficult six months following the ending of my marriage, I had a very significant dream with a profound message:
“First learn to love thy self.”
This message became the central theme of my memoir.
I translated my dream into a story called “Dreams on the Nile,” which was recently published on Two Drops of Ink blog. You can read it HERE
Egypt heralded many more solo holiday adventures to Morocco, Rome, India, Bali…

Splendid Brigid so nice to hear you had such a wonderful time and am quite sure these places must be beautiful. Great post.

So important to as you say Love Thy Self. Often we believe we do, but there are parts of us which we reject for many reasons and are unable to love. The River Nile is an amazing River is has very therapeutic energies. You do not have to swim in it. Cruising will benefit and staying near the River will help considerably. I live in a small village near the Nile it has been important for myself healing. Blessings

How can we expect love…if we do not first learn to love & be comfortable within ourselves!
Very powerful lessons!

I take courage from your words, I never value myself. It’s takes a good step back to know our beautiful we really are. Some one told me recently that if I don’t love myself how can some one else love me? Your post reinforces that advice. I wish you peace and joy on your journeys Brigid and that you will always find the strength from within your beautiful lovable self! You are a very special person and loved!

Truly a voyage of self-discovery 😉
I did a very similar tour of Egypt about a year after that (1 wk cruise, 1 wk in Luxor). Sounds like we even went with the same tour company since I’m guessing you went from Ireland also?
