The Garden in November 2018

Having completed my garden tidy up last month, I have become more relaxed and perhaps lazy…

Thankfully, the weather has been glorious – much nicer than both September and October.

Until yesterday, when it turned both stormy and wet!

Hopefully, it will have passed by the time this post is published.

Hellebore

My heart has been gladdened with the emergence of several families of Helleborus niger “Verboom Beauty.”:

Lavender

My pots of Lavender are still thriving, and are providing warmth and shelter for a number of happy snails. Sadly, they declined my invitation to be included in this photograph!

Primula and Cowslip

It never ceases to amaze me how hardy plants can be despite colder weather. These Primula and Cowslip are smiling away near their Hellebore buddies:

Calendula and Heuchera

Meanwhile a number of cheery Calendula are repeat flowering next to the darker leaves of their Heuchera companions:

The delicate flowers of Nigella are nestling in the undergrowth like fairy flowers.

Leprechauns

In recent months, I added a fun rockery filled with lots of spring bulbs, and two friendly leprechauns nicknamed Paddy and Nick, to keep an eye on the garden.

Nick must have been drinking too much mulled wine, as his hat is a little worse for wear!

Jobs for December

Bulbs

Continue to plant spring bulbs until the end of the month. Top Tips are included in a previous post HERE

Planning for 2019

Sit back and enjoy the fruits of your labour, and perhaps pore over a few seed catalogues to give you inspiration for 2019.

Feed the Birds

Please consider feeding the birds and any other local wildlife. You will be rewarded with hours of joy.

There will be no garden post in December, but I shall post a review of 2018, at the end of January.

  1. The garden is still lovely Brigid. I’m surprised to see some of them still growing nicely. You’ll soon be prepared for the new year season with all the wondrous surprises to come. I love the visits from your feathered friends, I shall make sure mine don’t go without over the Winter months.

  2. It is wonderful that so much is flowering later this year and your garden is a mixture of spring, summer and autumn delights! The lavender is divine and so vivid it’s as if I can sense its soothing fragrance! Your rockery is the neatest I’ve seen and you’ll have lots to show us in the new year. Spurred on by your gardening posts I planted out the last my bulbs at the weekend, some were even starting to show signs of blooming … hope they’ll be okay over the cold winter.

    • Thank you Lisa. You will have a lovely winter land. We have just had a touch of frost here and there. Ireland is not really prepared for large snowfalls but a little over the holidays gives a touch of magic. x

  3. I need to see if any of these hardy plants are hardy here, Brigid! How beautiful to have blooms outside in November and December. We have had some blooming recently but only on the plants we have brought inside to our garage (with furnace, so nice and temperate). Lovely photo inspiration and loved seeing your birds at the feeder!

  4. It must be so nice to have some blooms over these last couple of months of the year, I don’t have a garden but I buy flowers and have them in my home. I love the lavender, and to see a bit of whimsy with your two friendly leprechauns. Wishing you a wonderful holiday lots of blessings to you and your family.
