It seems timely to share this seasonal post from last year.
I recently learned how to decorate a Christmas wreath at our local Women’s Shed. I will share the technique with you step by step:
Resources
You will need:
- A basic straw wreath
- Green plastic tape
- Rolls of florist’s wire
- Metal pins
- Assorted foliage, including holly with berries
- Decorations including poinsettia, mistletoe, robins, ribbon…
Technique
Bind your straw wreath tightly with the green plastic tape, then bind it with the florist’s wire.
Top Tip
If you cannot find green plastic tape, cut up a green bin bag or carrier bag.
Next, add foliage in small bunches, using your florist’s wire to tie them in place. Just keep on weaving the wire around and around, a little at a time…
You are now ready to pin in some holly:
Eventually, you will reach this stage:
Add embellishments of your choice.
I went for a red and silver “poinsettia and mistletoe” theme:
The Finished Projects
I lined my finished wreath up in front of two others, to give you further inspiration. A cute robin adorns the middle wreath, while the rear model is embellished with gold ribbon.
I am normally a minimalist, but I added a final flourish of red ribbon this morning, before hanging my new creation on my front door.
I cannot help but smile at my efforts, and I should think the birds will enjoy the holly berries, before Christmas is over…

Wow Brigid amazing and awesome post. Must say you have done the best from your presentations. Thanks for the share.

I must write the story of my husband doing ‘bear training’ before his first trip to Greenland 5 or 6 years ago one day – it still makes me giggle. I adore all bears and penguins too (I always visit them first at London Zoo and at Cotswold Wildlife Park where they seem particularly happy) …. happy thoughts! 🙂

loved all the photos Brigid, thank you for sharing. we dont get christmas greens here on the equator so wreaths are the plastic variety. IKEA imports christmas trees so thats the closest i get to smelling fir trees and pine cones. your wreath was very lovely and looks a perfect welcome on the door.
