Dr Edward Bach Flower Essences

_Healing with the clean, pure, beautiful agents of nature is surely the one method of all which appeals to most of us._ Dr Edward Bach 1936

Dr Edward Bach Rescue Remedy is sold in chemists, pharmacies and health stores worldwide, endorsed by many for reducing stress and anxiety, aiding sleep…

Dr Edward Bach

Did you know that its creator – Dr Edward Bach died back in 1936?

He was a doctor ahead of his time, who intuited that the energy from flowers could be harnessed, to heal the emotions and in one of his remedies – to heal the the mind.

In turn, he felt that the body would heal itself.

Rescue Remedy

Dr Bach created 38 different flower essences and one combination essence known as Rescue Remedy.

Rescue Remedy contains five different essences:

  • Cherry Plum,
  • Clematis,
  • Impatiens,
  • Rock Rose,
  • Star of Bethlehem.

The Single Flower Essences

The remaining single essences were subdivided, for healing of seven different types of issues:

  • Fear,
  • Uncertainty,
  • Insufficient interest in present circumstances,
  • Loneliness,
  • Over sensitivity to influences and ideas,
  • Despondency and despair,
  • Over care for the welfare of others.

Overcoming Fear

The following five essences may aid in overcoming fear:

  • Aspen
  • Cherry Plum
  • Mimulus
  • Red Chestnut
  • Rock Rose

Aspen

Aspen aids healing of unknown fears or anxiety, when we suffer unexplained fear or feelings of foreboding.

Mimulus

Mimulus is useful for known fears, such as a fear of heights, fear of spiders, fear of flying…

Cherry Plum

Cherry Plum helps overcome a fear of letting go or losing control.

Red Chestnut

Red Chestnut aids in healing fear for the well being of our loved ones e.g over protective parents, grandparents, friends..

Rock Rose

Rock Rose helps overcome extreme fear, terror or fright e.g immediately after an accident or injury.

It is one of the ingredients of Dr Bach Rescue Remedy.

All of the above flower essences can help replace our fears with courage, confidence and inner strength.

Other Essences

I cannot include all 38 individual essences in one post, but here are some of my personal favourites:

Agrimony

Dr Edward Bach described those who would benefit from his flower essence Agrimony as:

“The jovial, cheerful, humorous people who love peace and are distressed by argument or quarrel, to avoid which they will agree to give up much…

They hide their cares behind their humour and are considered very good friends to know”

Hiding our true feelings can lead to addictive behaviours such as overeating, overwork…

Agrimony can aid us in being more open about our true feelings, instead of hiding behind a mask.

Larch

I find some of the most gifted people lack confidence in their own abilities.

Dr Bach Flower Essence Larch is :

“For those who do not consider themselves as good or capable as those around them, who expect failure, who feel that they will never be a success, and so do not venture or make a strong enough attempt to succeed.”

Larch flower essence will aid self confidence, and allow you to let your light shine.

Olive

“For those who have suffered much mentally or physically, and are so exhausted and weary that they have no more strength to make an effort.  Daily life is hard work for them without pleasure.”

These are the words of Dr Edward Bach, describing those in need of Olive Bach Flower Essence.

Many people are feeling a sense of exhaustion during the current Covid-19 crisis.

Olive can help you to heal both physical and mental exhaustion, and embrace vitality.

Walnut

Walnut is the Bach Flower Essence for easing the effects of change.  It is also incredibly helpful for strengthening the aura.

I have been taking Walnut regularly during the past few months. I know that it has helped me greatly during this challenging time.

If you imagine a walnut with its strong outer shell, taking Walnut flower essence is a natural way of nurturing resilience.

  1. Thanks for this Bridget, I’ve got some of this somewhere, I might take some. Mia has a urine/ kidney stone problem and I’m stressing like mad. I just wish she would eat all the food with her meds in. Unfortunately she is not a cat to let you push them down her throat 😬

    • Lovely. They are quite special aren’t they? I started using them around 1985 when a friend recommended them. I remember going to a talk by Julian Barnard in Edinburgh. They were a part of my course at college and once I became a practicing therapist in 1988, I offered them to all my clients. However, I have found them an essential part of my own healing journey. Thank you for sharing on FB. x

  4. I’ve only used one Bach product before, a rollerball that I still use (can’t remember the essence though – is there one for improving memory??) This is a great overview of all the different types and what they’re designed for, I never realised there were quite so many varieties. I definitely need some cherry plum for the control issues, but I want Rock Rose because I love the game of it. I really want to try some of these now, will have to scout around for prices. Excellent post lovely!

    • Rescue remedy is the most well known of his remedies Caz, so that was probably in the rollerball. The Bach Centre website has lots of great info on each remedy, and you will find names of therapists who can make an individual remedy especially tailored to your needs. I would never have managed life’s ups and downs without them. xx

  5. This is a great post, Brigid. I didn’t know what ingredients are in Rescue Remedy although I have used it. I am starting to feel exhausted by Covid-19 especially as it is picking up here and there are a lot of new infections. With my mom and Michael in my house, it is scary. Stay safe and well.

    • Thank you Robbie. I think Rescue Remedy is a good option for most people right now. I hope you all manage to get through Covid-19 in good health. Thankfully, it has eased considerably here in Ireland. A great relief.

  6. Thank you for this helpful post, Brigid. I’ve used essential oil but haven’t taken oral essence. I just ordered the Remedy essence. I know all the flowers in my garden calm my mind. I’ll see how this Remedy Essence works for me.

  7. Ahead of his time is right, Brigid. I always had a bottle of Rescue Remedy in the house and I swear it worked. Scents are powerful, and I have no doubt that they impact our brains and bodies. I’m going to make a point of going outside today and burying my face in a rose. 🙂 Wonderful post.
