My Donegal Garden in March 2020

Crocus which ventured out in February Storms

Please accept my apologies for not publishing a garden post in February, but the weather was somewhat stormy!

Thankfully, the latter part of this month has been dry and sunny, allowing me to catch up on my garden tasks.

I have been ably assisted by Fido my neighbours cat:

Mulching

It was a mild winter and weeds continued to grow in abundance, but I have less to contend with this year as I added a fine bark mulch to some of my flowerbeds last autumn.

Mulches have the following benefits:

  • Prevent weeds
  • Aid moisture retention in the soil
  • Protect plant roots from frost
  • Flowerbeds look more attractive.

Rambling Rector Rose

David Austin Roses are high on my list of favourite flowers. My collection grows a little each year and now includes Rambling Rector, described on their website as:

“Produces a magnificent show of strongly fragrant, white blooms
Bears large heads of small, semi-double, creamy white flowers, which eventually fade to white. Each flower exhibits a cluster of pretty yellow stamens. They have a powerful musky clove scent and are produced in great abundance on strong, dense, twiggy growth. The flowers are followed by masses of small hips in the autumn.”

New Growth

There is plenty of new growth at the moment, and a lot of tasks on my to do list, including a major makeover in my front garden. I shall keep you updated as it progresses.

The Back Garden

Meanwhile, these pots welcome visitors at my front door with their sweet scents:

  1. So lovely. The crocus are lovely. Ours are beginning to pierce the soil and I crave their colour…. thank you for giving me some in the meantime. And Fido. Thank you for sharing that sleek little panther and thank you, your neighbour for giving him such an excellent and ironic name 🐕 🐈

  2. There’s your beautiful garden and sweet Fido! Your garden is starting to look lovely, Brigid…I drink an herbal tea almost daily that has notes of rose (Numi Three Root) that I breathe in, it relaxes me and reminds me of innocent summer days.
